The Rapid Fire Women’s Self Defense Training System

June 21st, 2009

As a martial arts practitioner and instructor with over 30 years of experience I have been exposed to a number of different self-defense system and have learned what works and what doesn’t. The most common problem with the majority of self-defense programs available is that they are overly complicated and not practical for most people. The foundation of the Rapid Fire system is to be as simple as possible and allow anyone the opportunity to learn it regardless of age, body type or fitness level.

Rapid Fire Self Defense and Fitness is a program that incorporates simple yet effective techniques and strategies that all participants can follow. The system is based on one simple question “Are your arms free or not,” at which point you will learn to react quickly and effectively with the Rapid Fire striking sequence of high, low, middle and clear working towards your main goal of creating a window of opportunity for escape and getting to safety.

People always ask me why is this striking sequence so important? The simple answer is that you have programmed yourself to react with a consistent set of strikes that WORK! In any attack situation you do not have time to think about what you have learned or start questioning whether these techniques are going to work you just react with confidence.

The first thing you must learn is the Rapid Fire self-defense equation that incorporates these 4 essential components:

1)      Awareness

2)      Confidence

3)      Avoidance

4)      Preparation

These four points are vital in trying to prevent attack situations from occurring. Now that we have looked at the preventative method of the Rapid Fire system lets focus our attention on the teaching method of the actual self-defense techniques.

The Rapid Fire training system includes three methods of instruction:

1)      Air Techniques

2)      Pad Work

3)      Situational Training drills

In order to have a complete understanding of the training system I will now break each part down separately.

Air Techniques

- This is a method of training were a partner is not necessary, you will learn how to execute individual strikes as well as combinations in the air emphasizing proper technique and body mechanics.

Pad Work

-By using this approach to learning participants will develop a true feel for the techniques being taught, build a real sense of self-confidence and increase power and speed by striking a pad with an individual technique or in preset combinations.

Situational Training Drills

-This strategy of teaching will have the students simulating different attack situations and reacting with the strikes they have learned following the Rapid fire striking sequence of high, low, middle and clearing.

You can now see the importance of the Rapid Fire Training system and how it will realistically prepare you for actual attack situations.

A Final look at The Rapid Fire Self Defense Equation

June 7th, 2009

We are now going to take one final look at the Rapid fire Self Defense equation and see why it is so critical for your personal safety. Lets once again review the equation and the 4 essential components that make it work.

1)      Awareness

2)      Confidence

3)      Avoidance

4)      Preparation

When the equation is completely broken down we will have even a clearer understanding of its value and importance.

1)      Awareness – At all times be aware of your surroundings and circumstances never let an attacker catch you off guard

2)      Confidence – You must portray a sense of self-confidence in the way you walk, posture and body language never let an attacker look at you as a helpless victim

3)      Avoidance – Educate yourself to avoid situations that might place you in potential danger

4)      Preparation – Learn to prepare yourself both physically and mentally in a simple yet effective self defense system

You can now see how all four parts of this equation play such an important role in your personal safety. By reviewing this safety equation on a regular basis you will learn to make this part of your regular daily routine. This equation is just the beginning of the Rapid Fire system and as we continue with these articles you will learn what separates Rapid Fire from other programs. One thing I can tell you is the system was developed to be as simple as possible with a goal of allowing anyone the opportunity to learn it. Regardless of age, body type or fitness level Rapid Fire is a system that is practical for everyone from the experienced martial artist to the absolute beginner. Remember your main goal in a self-defense situation is to create a window of opportunity for escape and get to safety.

In up and coming articles we will get more in depth into the training methods and strikes used in the system but until then keep reviewing the Rapid Fire Self Defense equation until it becomes 2nd nature.

Here is a simple safety tip that you should always follow “Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in your surroundings leave.”

Avoidance the final part of the Self Defense Equation

May 31st, 2009

Over the last month or so we have been concentrating on the importance of the Rapid Fire Self Defense equation, so lets quickly review what we have focused on till now;

1)      Awareness- Always be aware of your surroundings and circumstance at all times never let yourself be caught of guard

2)      Confidence- Portray a sense of self-confidence in the way you walk, posture and body language never let an attacker look at you as a helpless victim

3)      Preparation- Prepare yourself both physically and mentally in a simple yet effective self defense program

The last part of the Rapid Fire Self Defense equation deals with avoidance. This is a vital part of the equation and is something that everyone can do and follow. I must stress the importance of educating yourself to avoid any situation that might place you in potential danger.

Using the following examples lets take a look at what this means and how we can go about implementing this simple yet effective strategy,

1)      Do not run by yourself in secluded areas

2)      Do not walk alone late at night

3)      Do not open doors to strangers

4)      Always be cautious around people you do not know

5)      Never leave your drink unattended

6)      Don’t let alcohol or drugs cloud your judgment

7)      Whenever possible do not walk in underground parking garages alone

Whether it is a friend, co-worker, security guard etc. being with someone else will dramatically reduce your chances of being put into a potentially dangerous situation. You can now see how the whole Rapid Fire self-defense equation ties together and by following these basic guidelines you are definitely going to improve your personal safety.

Preparation a key step in Self Defense

May 24th, 2009

Over the last month or so I have broken down a number of the essential ingredients that make up the Self Defense equation, in this article we are going to focus on the importance of preparation and why it plays such a key role.

Lets take a quick look at what we have discussed in previous articles:

1)      Common sense- How using something as simple as common sense can make a huge difference to your personal safety.

2)      Awareness-You must be aware of your surroundings and circumstances at all times never let yourself be caught of guard.

3)       Confidence-Always portray a sense of self-confidence in the way you walk posture and body language never let an attacker look at you as a helpless victim.

These 3 points play a major role in the whole Self Defense equation and now we are going to add another key component and that is “Preparation.”

You must learn to prepare yourself both physically and mentally in simple yet effective self-defense program. In order to give yourself the best possible chance of escaping an attack situation you must practice the techniques you have learned time and time again until they become second nature. This includes the following:

1)      Getting yourself in good physical condition so you can apply what you have learned

2)      Strike pads so you can develop a true feel for the technique

3)      Practice over and over again and build a true sense of confidence in yourself

4)      Learn how to maximize your speed and power

5)      Practice different attack situations so you can improve your reaction time

These are all physical parts of preparation, now let’s look at how the mental training can give you that important edge over your attacker. Learn how to visualize in your mind different attack scenarios and how you would react to that situation. Think about the techniques you would use and remaining calm so you can get to safety. Even the toughest person might not be able to react quickly when put under stressful conditions without first preparing themselves mentally. Mental training requires time and patients to learn but it can be one of the best skills you can develop. Imagine how much this could help you in preparing for a work presentations, sports, problem solving and personal insecurities the benefits are endless.

The Rapid Fire Self Defense system incorporates both physical and mental preparation as part of the self-defense equation. I can not emphasize enough that there are no short cuts to learning self-defense and the more prepared you are both physically and mentally the better your chances are for a successful escape from an attack situation

Take care and try to your best to be safe,

Confidence an Essential for your Personal Safety

May 18th, 2009

When creating the Rapid Fire Self Defense equation I took into account a number of different components that were essential to make this system successful and one of the most important things I came up with was the role of a real sense of Self Confidence. Now lets take a look at how and why being confidant can play such an important role in your personal safety. You must always portray a sense of self-confidence in the way you walk; talk and body language NEVER let an attacker look at you as a helpless victim.

In order to portray a real sense of self-confidence you must truly believe in yourself and the techniques that you have learned. The only way of obtaining this is by training in a realistic self-defense system and practicing these skills time and time again until they become second nature. Confidence is something that can’t be faked, and you must have a 100% belief in what you have learned and the ability to apply it when the time arises.

Whenever facing an attack situation you must always believe in yourself and have no doubt in your mind that you have developed the skills necessary to create that window of opportunity for escape and the ability to get to safety. It is hard enough at the best of times to be able to react in a stressful situation that places you in danger and the last thing that you want to be thinking about is are you really prepared.

The Rapid Fire Self Defense system that I created was developed so you could build confidence in yourself by practicing these new techniques you have learned on your own or with a partner in 3 different ways:

1)      In the air

2)      Into pads

3)      And different attack scenarios

By using the Rapid Fire training system you will learn the following:

-         How to maximize your speed and power

-         Develop a true feel for the technique

-         And be able to practice applying the skills you have learned in actual attack situations

By following this method of practice you will develop a real sense of self-confidence in what you have learned. Remember Self Confidence is one of the strongest human characteristics we can develop and this will benefit your life in every way.

Until next time remember to be confident and safe,

Awareness is an Essential part of The Self Defense Equation

May 3rd, 2009

The Rapid Fire Self Defense and Fitness program definition for Awareness:

“Be aware of your surroundings and circumstances at all times, never let yourself be caught of guard.”

One very import part of the Self Defense equation is awareness and this is something that everyone can follow at all times. It can’t be emphasized enough that women should always be aware of who’s out there and what is going on around them at all time. You should always trust your instincts no matter how trivial it may seem, if you feel uncomfortable in your surroundings LEAVE. For some people it is a matter of re-educating yourself about simple safety tips that can make a huge difference to your personal safety.

1)      Don’t let drugs or alcohol cloud your judgment.

2)      Watch out for unwanted visitors. Always know who’s on the other side of the door before you open it.

3)      Be very aware of isolated spots like underground garages, offices after business hours and apartment laundry rooms. Attackers will use any tactics they can to catch you unprepared.

4)      Avoid walking or jogging alone especially at night. Vary your route and stay in well-traveled well-lit areas.

A complete Self Defense program needs to educate its participant’s about all aspects of protecting yourself. The topic of this discussion has been awareness and how just a few very simple safety tips can make the biggest difference to your personal protection.

As the creator of the Rapid Fire Women’s Self Defense and Fitness program I have put a huge emphasis on preventing situations before they happen. It is very easy to follow these simple safety tips but with the busy life that most of us lead we tend to overlook what is important and what is not.

Awareness is just one part of The Rapid Fire Self Defense equation on how to prevent you from being caught off guard. Remember the most important thing is for you to be safe so that you can enjoy al the happiness and joy that life will bring you.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A SELF-DEFENSE PROGRAM

Being the Creator of “The Rapid Fire Women’s Self Defense & Fitness Program” as well as a Professional Martial Artist with over 30 years of experience one of the most common questions I hear is what should I look for in a good Self-Defense program.

In order to answer that question lets take a look and see what is involved in learning Self-Defense. The equation to a successful Self Defense program will incorporate the following 5 essential components

1)      Awareness

2)      Confidence

3)      Avoidance

4)      Preparation

5)      Common Sense

I feel very strongly that missing any parts of this equation and your self-defense program would not be complete.

Now let’s take a look at what specifically makes a Self-Defense system work. First off and most importantly the program itself must be realistic. Second the system must be taught in a way that makes it very easy for everyone to learn and understand. The third thing to look for when learning self-defense is that the techniques being taught are simple, practical and effective. The last thing is that the program you are enrolling in must allow everyone the opportunity to learn it regardless of age, shape or fitness level. I am a big fan of the K.I.S.S. theory of “Keep it Simple Self-Defense.” Remember what your main goal in an attack situation is and that’s to create a window of opportunity for escape and get to safety. All to many times people think they are learning how to beat up their attacker and nothing can be further from the truth.

Like everything else self-defense has had to evolved with the times and therefore the program you enroll in must have a dual purpose and outcome of not only teaching you how to defend yourself in an attack situation but also help get you in better physical condition to help increase your odds of a successful escape.

An effective program like the Rapid Fire Self Defense system should be taught in a way that you can practice these new techniques you are learning on your own or with a partner in 3 different ways in the air, into pads and different attack situations. By using these 3 methods of training you will learn to maximize your speed and power, develop a true feel for the techniques, build your self-confidence and practice actual attack situations.

It is so important to know that there are no secrets to learning Self-defense and preparing yourself both mentally and physically to the best of your ability is absolutely essential. It is importance to become as confident as possible with these new techniques you have been taught and the only way of achieving this goal is by practicing what you have learned over and over again until your reaction becomes second nature.  There are no guarantees with self-defense therefore the more prepared you are the better your chances of a successful escape from an attack situation.

Self Defense and the simple answer

April 19th, 2009

As the creator of a self-defense program for women it was important for me to determine what was the best way to go about that. Being a martial arts instructor for over 15 years and having being exposed to numerous system and concepts I felt it was time to take a long hard look at the challenge ahead.

What I realized was that the simple approach has always worked the best regardless of whether it was for the recreational martial artist or a professional fighter the basic concepts were always the answer.

As I continue to post updates I am going to give you pieces of the puzzle that will hopefully make understanding this Self Defense system very easy.

The simplest piece of advice I can give people is to use a gift that everyone has and that is common sense. This answer main seem too easy to be true but let’s take a look at this example and see what you would do.

You work in an office building downtown that has a security guard stationed 24 hours a day. It’s late, you have put in a full day and everyone else has gone home and your car is parked in the buildings underground parking lot.

a) Do you walk to your car alone and just go about your regular business?

b) Ask the security guard to walk you to your car?

This should be a very simple answer but most people will overlook the obvious. Never feel that you are a burden especially when it involves your personal safety. The answer to the above situation would be “B” ask the security guard.

I will finish by saying I can’t stress enough the importance of using common sense as the “ultimate” self-defense tool.

Until next time be safe and take care,
